Tips for Keeping Pests Out of Your Pool - TMC Custom Pools

Your pool is a serene oasis, specifically designed to keep your family cool, comfortable, and relaxed during the hot summer months. Unfortunately, pools can also attract insects. You can make your outdoor sanctuary less attractive to bugs with these easy tips.

Keep your pool covered when it’s not in use.

Covering your pool is an effective way to keep uninvited guests out of it. There are different types of pool covers, so be sure to talk to an expert pool contractor before choosing the one that’s right for you. One popular type is an automatic, solid safety cover. This will not only protect your pool from bugs, but it will also prevent children and pets from falling into the pool when no one’s around to help.

Trim back foliage from around the pool.

The landscaping around your pool should ideally feature minimal foliage. If your plant growth is getting out of control, trim it back. This will discourage insects from taking up residence next to your pool, and it will help keep dead plant matter out of your pristine water.

Install insect deterrents.

While most foliage is attractive to bugs, some isn’t. Consider planting some citronella plants. Lavender, marigolds, chrysanthemums, lemongrass, and lemon thyme also repel pesky bugs like mosquitoes. And if you prefer to have your bugs eaten instead of repelled, consider landscaping with carnivorous plants, like pitcher plants.

Get your pool cleaned regularly.

Arrange to have the pool contractor clean your pool every week. It’s essential to routinely remove dead plant matter, algae, and dead insects, as these can attract living insects. Plus, routine cleaning makes your pool far more inviting for your family and guests.
