Pool Renovations: Is It Time to Install a Slide? - TMC Custom Pools

Your pool is already the highlight of your home, and it’s provided your family with countless hours of enjoyment. But if you’re ready to make your pool even more fun for the kids, it’s time to talk to a pool contractor about installing a slide. A slide can bring the excitement of the amusement park right to your backyard!

Determining If Your Pool Can Accommodate a Slide

Before you get the kids excited about the prospect of a pool slide, you should talk to the contractor to ensure your backyard can accommodate this new feature. In some cases, it’s a matter of functionality and aesthetics. For example, if you have a long, narrow pool intended for swimming laps, a slide might not fit in well. You’ll also need to consider whether the pool deck is large enough to accommodate a slide. The pool contractor will talk you through the different sizes and styles of slides to determine which one would be the best fit.

Sorting Through Safety Regulations

The slide you choose will need to comply with all local safety codes and requirements. If you have a shallow pool, you’ll need a short slide. A deep pool can accommodate a taller slide. Other factors to consider include:

  • Minimum dimensions for ladder platforms
  • Handrails and slip-resistant surfaces at the top of the slide
  • Load-bearing capacity
  • Integrity of the fasteners

Choosing the Right Slide

Once you and the contractor have determined that your pool could safely accommodate a slide, it’s time to pick the right one. If space on the pool deck is at a premium, you may be advised to select a curving or spiral slide. These styles are often more fun for swimmers too, although you could select a straight slide if your backyard area can accommodate an eight-to 13-foot slide.
